Assessment - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Effective August 1, 2010 All assessment tests will be by appointment only. Call 619-388-3023 or 619-388-3540 to schedule an assessment test.

Purpose

New City College students take Math and English assessment tests to determine which classes to take first.

Important: The assessment tests should be taken very seriously.  If you are not satisfied with your test results, you will need to wait 3 years before being allowed to retake the test.  Also, you cannot retake the test once you complete an English or Math class at City College.

Who should take an assessment test? – Students who*:

1. Plan to take English or Mathematics

2. Plan to take a course that has an English or Math prerequisite or advisory

3. Plan to obtain an associate degree

4. Plan to transfer to a four year college or university

*Exemptions: You do not need to take an assessment test if you already earned an associate or higher-level degree OR can prove that you have taken equivalent English and Math classes at another college or university.  However, a transcript from your previous school(s) will be required. Please visit or call the Records Office (Room A-109; 619-388-3474) for more information

Available Math assessment tests – you have a choice of which math assessment test to take.  There are 2 tests to choose from:

1.  Arithmetic

2.  Elementary Algebra

You should choose the test that best matches your math level.

ESOL assessment test – non native English speakers have the option of taking the English assessment test or an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) assessment test.

Sample Math and English Assessment tests – sample Math and English assessment tests are available online on the Student Web Resources page on our district site and in the Counseling Office.

Important: You should review the sample tests before taking your assessment tests.  This will help you to know what to expect on the tests and to be better prepared.

Prerequisites and Advisories  IMPORTANT: When choosing your classes, always be aware of any conditions for registration, such as prerequisites and advisories.  See the City College catalog or a Counselor for more information.

§      Prerequisites are classes that you MUST complete with a “C” or better before you are allowed to register in the next higher-level class.  For example:

Mathematics 104 (Trigonometry) has the following prerequisites: Mathematics 96 (Intermediate Algebra and Geometry) with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Level M50.

IMPORTANT: All prerequisites will be strictly enforced when you register for classes. If you do not meet the prerequisite requirements, you will NOT be allowed to register for the
class(es) that you want.

§      Advisories are RECOMMENDED classes for you to complete before you register in the next higher-level class.  Advisories DO NOT keep you from registering for classes, but they are strongly recommended to help you be successful in your classes.  For example:

Sociology 101 has the following advisory: English 48 AND English 49, each with a grade of “C” or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5
